VENUE AND GUEST LIST

If you’re planning a wedding, the best place to start is booking a venue. Decide whether you want a single venue for the whole day or separate locations for your ceremony and reception. Have a look around at a range of options and think about what you want. Do you want a traditional formal affair? Or would rather host a laid-back beach wedding? Draw up a list of contenders and book some viewings. It’s a good idea to have a rough guest list in mind when looking around venues. Your party size may limit your options.

DRESS AND ACCESSORIES

Searching for a dream dress is perhaps the most exciting part of the entire planning process. Arrange some appointments at local boutiques and try an array of styles. You may be surprised at what suits you. Once you’ve found your dress, you can think about accessories, shoes and jewelry. If your dress is a showstopper, go easy on the accessories. If you’ve gone for something classic and understated, add a necklace, bracelet or some earrings. Leave yourself plenty of time to buy wedding rings. Choose a style, which matches your engagement ring. If your ring is custom-designed like Tacori engagement rings, it may be best to order a bespoke band.

PHOTOGRAPHER

You want to look back on your wedding with fond memories and it’s essential to choose a photographer that will capture the magic of your day. Search online for local photographers and arrange to meet some and check out their portfolios.

CATERING

Some venues provide their own catering. In other cases, you can choose the kind of food you want. If you’re not keen on a sit-down dinner, go for a barbecue, afternoon tea or a hot buffet. Once you have final numbers, you can work out costs and final menus.

INVITATIONS

As soon as you have a date, it’s wise to send out a save the date card or an online reminder. It’s always beneficial to give people plenty of notice. Send your invitations out around 4-6 months before the wedding. Include information about the venue location, accommodation options and timings. It’s also helpful to provide directions. Make sure you ask guests to RSVP by a certain date.

TRANSPORTATION

Think about how you want to travel to and from your wedding. Are you keen on a classic car or a horse-drawn carriage? Or do you fancy breaking the mould with a vintage bus, a New York cab or even a helicopter?

DECORATIONS

Once you’ve got all the big jobs out of the way, you can focus on those all-important finishing touches. Book some hair and makeup trials and order a cake. Look into room decorations and centerpieces. Draw up your seating plan and research chair covers. Look for inspiration in wedding magazines.

Planning a wedding is probably one of the most stressful things you’ll ever do. But it’s also one of the most exciting. Draw up lists and create a calendar. Write down every job that needs doing and work your way through. Get friends and family on board and don’t be afraid to stray from the traditional wedding format. Do what makes you happy, and have the most incredible day!
