A Guide To Staying Healthy When Working From Home

I can personally attest to how difficult it can be to take care of your health when you work from home.

Working from home can be terrible for your health if you aren’t careful. You no longer have a walk to work, or to your nearest bus or train stop. You’re not walking between floors at the office or stopping at the gym on the way home. It’s also easy to surround yourself with snacks that you shouldn’t be eating.

Working from home can cause you to become sedentary and to eat too much. But it doesn’t have to be that way. You can use being a home worker to your advantage and make your lifestyle healthier than it was when you worked elsewhere.

Best Tips To Protect Your Health When Working From Home

Resist Unhealthy Snacks

One of the biggest dangers to your health, when you work from home, is snacking. It’s so easy to reach for your favorite unhealthy snacks and munch on them all day. So what’s the best way to avoid overindulging? Ideally, you shouldn’t have them in the house at all. That will remove the temptation completely so you can snack on healthier things.

You don’t have to give them up completely, but you’ll have to get out of the house if you want something. Sometimes, it’s not possible to get rid of unhealthy snacks. If you have roommates or a family, they probably don’t want their snacks to disappear. Make sure you have healthier alternatives available. And if you still can’t resist, lock snacks away and give someone else the key.

Give Yourself a Lunch Break

How many times have you worked through lunch? Maybe you nibbled on something as you beavered away, but you didn’t stop for a break. It’s important to look after both your physical needs and your mental health while you’re working. If you don’t allow yourself breaks, you could end up feeling stressed and not to mention hungry. Stopping for lunch lets you make sure you eat properly and slowly so that you have time to digest your food. You get to give your mind a break and step away from your screen for a little while.

Use the Extra Time to Eat Properly

Working from home can cause your diet to take a downturn. But if you’re smart about it, you can use it to your advantage. Theoretically, you have more time when you work at home. You have no commute so you’ve got extra time to do other things.

One of the ways you can use this time is to make proper food. Instead of grabbing a sandwich at lunchtime, you might have time to make a proper meal. At least, you could put something into a slow cooker in the morning so it’s ready for your lunch. You could use the time you would spend getting home making a proper dinner.

Set Your Workout Hours

Another way to use those extra hours is to exercise. You can do your workouts in the morning or evening when other people are stuck in rush hour traffic. But it’s unlikely to happen if you don’t plan on it. The best thing to do is decide when you’re going to work out during the week. It’s up to you what time of day you choose, but you might prefer the mornings.

You can set out everything you need the night before so you’re ready to go when you wake up. Scheduling your day is important. If you’re not careful, you can end up spending all your waking hours working.

Set Up a Home Workout Space

You can choose to work out at home or go elsewhere. If you do it at home, you’ll need a space to do it. You could create a full home gym, but you don’t have to. Just one piece of exercise equipment might be enough for you. You could consider spin cycles or treadmills to give you a cardio workout.

Or you might get a set of weights to do some strength training. You don’t necessarily have to set up a dedicated workout space. A lot of people work out in front of the TV or clear some space in their bedroom. However, it is helpful if you have somewhere you can go just to do your workouts.

Exercise Out of the House

Some people who work from home would much prefer to exercise out of the house. It prevents them from being cooped up all day and gives them a chance to socialize. If you want to make your lifestyle healthier, leaving home to do your workouts could be a sensible option.

You could go to the gym if that’s how you like to keep fit. However, there are lots of other ways you can work on your physical fitness. For example, going for a walk or run ensures that you get outside, which is essential when you work from home. If you join a club or group, you’ll get to meet people too.

Create a Healthy Workspace

When you’re working from home, you need to ensure your workspace is healthy. If you work at a desk, that means ensuring that you’re sitting comfortably. You need to pay attention to your desk and your chair. You need a chair that will support your back, and you also need to ensure you sit on it properly. Having your feet flat on the floor and sitting up will help your back.

Rather than sitting up straight, leaning back slightly can be better for your back. Don’t forget about your wrists when you’re typing too. A wrist support can help to keep them healthier and prevent repetitive strain injury.

Remember to Stand

Just like when you’re working in an office, it’s important to stand up from your desk. But at home, you don’t stand up to walk across the office or go out to lunch. It’s important to make an effort to stand up regularly. One of the options you have is to get a standing desk. You can choose one that adjusts so you can stand or sit whenever you want to. But if you don’t have one, you can set a timer to make sure you stand up now and then.
Don’t let working from home make you unhealthy. You can use it as an opportunity to make your lifestyle healthier.
