How To Pick The Right Hair Color
A few months back I wrote about coloring your hair at home and I realized the story doesn’t end there! Ladies, have you ever dyed your hair and looked in the mirror and said, “What have I done?” We all have. I have been coloring my hair since I was 13 and believe me there has been many a mishap. Even if you have your hair colored in a salon you should have an idea of what the best color for you is.
How To Find Your Skintone
I am sure many women think it’s about the eyes, well it is actually more about the skin tone. The truth is, you can be any color but finding the right hair color is actually about knowing which shade of any color fits your skin tone. We tend to think it is the same as buying makeup, we are either fair, medium or dark. This is not how any of this works (giggle)
That may be the color but it isn’t the tone. We all have either Cool, Warm or Deep skin tone. The surest way to tell is to take a look at the veins inside your wrist. If your veins are blue or purple, you are a cool tone. If your veins are greenish, you are a warm tone. This means you need to pick from a contrasting color family. The wrong shade can totally wash you out and that isn’t what you want. The right shade should enhance your skin.
Cooler Tones>>warm shades
- Honey
- Chocolate
- Golden Blond
Warmer Tones>>cool or ash shade
- Rich Brown
- Champagne or Platinum Blond
- Amber
Deeper Tones (dark skin)
- Honey
- Chocolate
- Golden Blonde
Pros say that African American women should either choose a shade lighter or darker at least to complement the skin tone. Hence why celebrities like Beyonce and Rihanna can pull of the hair color we often see them wearing.
Wanna Be A Redhead?
It’s no secret I love red hair! I am a brunette right now but I always go back to red. Red hair has so much personality and drama. It is sexy and what woman doesn’t want to be a siren? Red can also be a difficult color, it bleeds out fast and can be difficult to attach to the hair. Another fact to know is once you go red it is challenging to get out.
Anyone can be a redhead, once again it’s about the right shade to match your skin tone. Warm skin tones look better with gold tones like Ginger and Cinnamon. Cool skin tones (like me) rock the Ruby and Violet shades. Red hair color does tend to look better with certain shades, take a look:
Light Skin>> Strawberry Blond
Medium Skin>>Copper and Auburn
Dark Skin>> Ruby and Bright Rich Reds
How To Rock A Crazy Color
Seems like everybody was getting crazy colors last year like Pink, Blue, Green, and even Coral was hot. I love it and believe it or not there is also a science to matching up these colors as well.
Olive Skin>>Neon Pink or Orange
Dark Skin>>Any Pastels or Neons
Brown Eyes>>Dark Neons like Green or Purple
Green Eyes>>Any Neon and Pastel Pink
Blue Eyes>>Neon Orange and Pastel Blue
Color Care Tips
No matter which color you choose, caring for your locks is important! Condition, Condition, Condition. You have to keep your hair conditioned well, did I say condition? The shampoo you use is important too. It’s essential to note that when you color your hair you want to wash your hair LESS and use Sulfate-free shampoos.
Sulfates are basically what makes the shampoo lather and we associate that with being clean but that is not the truth. These chemicals strip the hair of its oils and actually scrub the color off.
Here are some really great shampoos you can buy online>>here
If you are coloring your hair a dramatic shade, I would invest in a color lock glaze, it can actually extend the life of your color and prevent fading. You can find this online>>here

Awesome tips. Love the post
Good tips about choosing a suitable colour for your skin tone. I’ve been dying my hair for over 20 years now and like you have had many mishaps, I’ve been blonde, brown, red, blonde again and now back to red. I do love being red but as you say it bleeds really quickly and is a nightmare to get out of your hair if you want to go lighter. Might go back to blonde at some point.
Me too Denise I’m pretty old lol. Thanks for reading
Awesome tips. Personally, I don’t trust myself enough to dye my own hair, lol.

I hear you, I actually have a cousin who is a colorist and she taught me some useful tips.
Hey great tips! I’m currently a redhead 😉 I use a non-permanent gloss which washes out after about six weeks, and actually really like all the different shades I get as it fades back to light brown. xo Miss Portmanteau
Very nice, I am also going back to Red it is a love affair I’ve had for years.
I need to get my hair colour redone! It is so much easier to pick the colour I want now.
Thanks ,I am glad I could help it can be horrid when we dye the wrong color and your skin tone can actually make the color look different or orange even.
