Maybe Baby? Fertility Tips
Trying for a baby is one of the most exciting times in a couple’s life but sometimes waiting for Nature to take its course can push your patience to its limits.
If you have been advised that you may need assistance in conceiving, IVF or drug treatments have up to now led the way. Some couples however are embracing alternative therapies in order to improve their chances of having a baby naturally.
Chinese traditional medicines have been used for centuries. These therapies are now well used in today’s society. One of the most well known is acupuncture. This practice has been used to aid weight loss and to help smokers kick the habit for good but there is also a wide variety of acupuncture infertility help available in conjunction with or replacement of western more traditional treatments
Acupuncture is based on the theory that vital energy (or “qi,” pronounced “chi”) flows through the body along certain pathways. Acupuncturists try to balance this energy and restore health by stimulating specific points along the pathways with thin needles.
In 2002, a team of researchers speculated that acupuncture helped increase blood flow to the uterus, giving the embryos a better chance of implanting. Other research does suggest that acupuncture is effective in reducing stress. Combatting the stress associated with infertility issues goes a long way towards assisting in this process but what exactly is stress?
Stress is primarily a physical response to the body thinking it is under attack. Releasing a complex mix of hormones and chemicals such as adrenaline, cortisol and norepinephrine, it prepares the body for physical action. This causes a number of reactions, from blood being diverted to muscles to shutting down unnecessary bodily functions such as digestion.
As stress has been shown to interfere with getting pregnant, reducing this through acupuncture could theoretically improve your odds of conceiving.
Scientific studies that massage may improve fertility or increase your chances of getting pregnant are inconclusive, Saying that at least one study has showed that hands-on therapies can significantly reduce your anxiety level. In line with the acupuncture findings, stress can interfere with getting pregnant. It therefore makes sense that reducing stress through massage, could again improve your rate of fertility success.
In studies, it took as little as ten minute sessions to show significant reduction in stress and heart rate levels.
As well as reducing the stress of trying to conceive, it can be an activity for both to enjoy in order to promote relaxation at what can be a very difficult time.
Qigong (pronounced chee-KUNG) s a form of exercise resembling Tai Chi, but with fewer, more defined movements. The ideal behind the therapy is to move the body in certain ways to remove any spiritual or physical blockages. Working along the same principles of acupuncture, when you lift a blockage – you restore health.
Movements are simple and repeated many times with eyes closed akin to yoga or pilates. When it comes to targeting fertility, this very simple practice is done daily for five to 10 minutes at a time. The process is designed to increase energy levels and promote positivity,
At the centre of all of these therapies appears to be the same core values. Eating well, taking care of your health and, above all, reducing stress are at the very heart of improving your chances of becoming parents.
All alternative therapies should be discussed with your medical advisor before commencing.
